Frequently Asked Questions

1 – How do I know what’s going on at Wesley? The weekly newsletter is available online at the website, by e-mail or by regular mail.  It provides a broad overview of Wesley. To receive The Wesley Window by e-mail or regular mail, contact the office 706.869.0888 or office@wesleyumc.net. The weekly worship bulletin also includes announcements.

2 – Wesley is a large church.  How do I keep from getting lost “in the shuffle?” As you visit Wesley, our Evangelism Director is available for questions or concerns or just general conversation about Wesley and you.  Contact Mary Carolyn Thigpen at 706.869.0888, x 214 or marycarolyn@wesleyumc.net

3 – What is the preaching rotation? Pastors rotate through the worship styles (Contemporary or Traditional) on a three week rotation.  Pastor A leads 8:30 and 9:30 Traditional then 11:00 Contemporary while Pastor B leads 9:30 Contemporary and 11:00 Traditional for three weeks, then the rotation switches.  Generally worshipers select a worship style and hour and worship regularly then.  We encourage you to select an Adult Sunday Study Group first and then worship at the alternate hour.

4 – What do Methodists believe?  We hold traditional Christian beliefs and invite you to learn more by asking questions or by visiting www.umc.org/Beliefs.

“John Wesley and the early Methodists were particularly concerned about inviting people to experience God’s grace and to grow in their knowledge and love of God through disciplined Christian living. They placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as "practical divinity" has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today.”

We invite you to attend an Inquirers’ Class.  Twice yearly, this small group, relaxed environment provides a look at the United Methodist Church and Wesley United Methodist Church .

5 – What is expected of a Wesley member?

  • To worship regularly.
  • To continue to grow in your faith by participating in a small group study.
  • To serve God with your hands, by volunteering in service to the congregation and the community and world.
  • To give regularly in proportion to your income.

6 – How do I join Wesley? You can become a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in one of the following ways:

  • Profession of Faith—is the initial entrance into membership when one professes faith in Jesus Christ.  If you have never been baptized, we ask that you schedule an appointment with a pastor.
  • Reaffirmation of Faith—is the renewing of one’s initial profession of faith after a period of inactivity or not being on a church membership roll.
  • Transfer of Membership—may be from another United Methodist Church or a Christian church of another denomination.  We recognize Baptism from all other Christian churches.

7 – Why is membership important?  Membership signifies your intent to join with existing church members for working together to bring Christ to the world. Working together enables us to work better, to work stronger in ministry at Wesley and through Wesley to the local community and beyond.

8 – Can I be involved before I join?  Absolutely!  We want you to experience what God does through Wesley United Methodist Church .  That experience comes best through participation.  Contact any of Wesley’s staff for information about being involved.
